Inside Sailfish Boats: A Conversation with President & CEO Rob Parmentier

Posted:19/02/2025 10:10AM

With 42 years in the boating industry, Sailfish Boats President & CEO Rob Parmentier has seen it all. From shifts in customer expectations to technological advancements, he’s been at the forefront of building boats that suit the evolving needs and expectations of customers today.

Sailfish is different, and in no small part due to Parmentier’s involvement and deep understanding of the entire boat manufacturing process. Customer expectations are higher than ever, and that sets the standard for Sailfish’s build, design and customer care processes. "Most of our customers drive high-end vehicles. Whether it’s a luxury SUV or a loaded Ford F-150, people expect reliability—and they expect the same from their boat."

Meeting those expectations means building boats that last longer, require less maintenance, and deliver a premium experience on the water. Thanks to advancements in materials and manufacturing, today's boats are far more durable than they were decades ago. "In my four decades in this industry, boats have gotten 100 times better in terms of quality and longevity," says Parmentier.

What Sets Sailfish Boats Apart?

At the heart of Sailfish’s success is its construction process. Under Parmentier’s leadership, the brand has become known for its durability, performance, and timeless design. "We use no wood in our boats—none. Everything is through-bolted, backed with aluminum plates, and reinforced with Kevlar in key stress areas to prevent cracks and wear. The use of prisma beams on the underside of our decks, makes for an incredibly solid feel underfoot, eliminating any flex or sponginess."

Then there’s Sailfish’s signature Variable Degree Stepped Hull (VDS)—a design that ensures a smoother, drier ride with better efficiency. "This hull design came from the original offshore racing boats. It gives you lift and stability while requiring minimal trim adjustments. The result? A boat that performs effortlessly in a variety of conditions."

Since taking the helm at Sailfish, Parmentier has refined the boats, bringing in top designers and improving structural elements "We’ve added extra layers of fiberglass, increased Kevlar reinforcements, and fine-tuned the design. The result? A boat that’s not only stronger and more reliable but also sleek and elegant. I like to call it affordable luxury—a high-end experience without the high-end price."

Beyond manufacturing, Rob lends his extensive experience in quality and continuous improvement. Under his leadership, Sailfish has become a leader in quality control. Parmentier leads a weekly collaborative durability review meeting that includes a person from each department in manufacturing, ensuring that any recurring warranty issue gets addressed immediately. "If something happens twice, we fix it. We adjust our processes, refine materials, or change suppliers to make sure our boats stay ahead of the curve. Six years ago, I overhauled our supplier network, replacing nearly 10 vendors with better partners—and it’s made a world of difference."

Parmentier’s unique approach to the customer experience involves finding the best boat for every lifestyle. For first-time boat buyers, choosing the right boat can feel overwhelming. That’s why Parmentier and the Sailfish team focus on matching customers with the right model for their needs. "Are you taking your family to the sandbar? Do you need more freeboard for kids and pets? Are you fishing offshore or just cruising? These questions matter. Getting the right boat means a better experience, and that’s what we focus on."

Equally important is choosing the right dealership, getting proper training, and ensuring owners feel confident on the water. "A bad experience—like struggling to dock or trailer a boat—can turn someone off from boating entirely. That’s why we emphasize education, training, and customer support. If we do it right, we don’t just sell a boat—we build a customer for life."

Sailfish continues to set the standard for durability, performance, and lifestyle. Whether you’re a first-time owner or a seasoned boater, Sailfish delivers lasting quality and value. Great boats don’t follow trends, they create legacies.
